More Than Anything

“If you’re going to leave, just leave,” I said. “You can keep the ring. I couldn’t take it back.”

Jenna reached.

“Keep it,” I said, pushing her hand away. “I’d be too embarrassed to return the ring.”

Jenna sighed and looked down. “It wasn’t supposed to end like this.”

“Remember when we didn’t have a dime between us?”

“Mark…” Jenna held her head in her hands. “We’ve been over this a thousand times. It’s over.”

“Just listen to me, and if you still feel nothing for me, I’ll let you go.”

“I’m all ears,” Jenna said and lowered her body to the brown leather sofa.

“I shouldn’t have said I hated you more than I loved you. It wasn’t true,” I said.

“But you still said it!” Jenna said.

“But I didn’t mean it.”

“What did you mean then?”

I lowered my chin. “I’m not the best at this ‘love’ thing.”

“You can say that again.” Jenna folded her lips under her teeth, hiding a grin.

“Don’t leave. Please,” I said. “I need you.”

“More than you hate me?”

“More than anything!”

“I wanted to stay more than I wanted to leave anyway,” Jenna said and pressed her warm lips to mine.
