White Girls Get Away With … Everything

“Get out of this house right now!” Gabby said.
“No,” I said. “We’re talking it out.” I folded my arms across my chest.
“There’s nothing left to say.”
“I can’t believe you robbed a bank.”
“Didn’t think I had it in me, did you?”
I took a sip of coffee then shook my head. “I didn’t. I know you were irrational but…”
“Oh, you would call me ‘irrational,’ but who pays the bills around here? It’s not you.”
“I lost my job because of the stupid virus. I already feel like less of a man because of it.”
“You are!” Gabby said.
“Maybe your mother was right about you.”
“What exactly was Mom right about?”
“You’re self-centered as fuck.”
“Am not–“
“Are too!”
“Can’t we just enjoy the money?” Gabby held up a duffel bag filled with cash.
I blew out my lips. “This just isn’t right,” I said, staring at the money. This cash could give us a fresh start and keep me from asking Dad for another loan. “We can’t…you can’t rob another bank again.”
“I consider this my retirement.”
“How much did you get?” I raised a brow.
“Over two million dollars.”
“From one bank?”
“So…” Gabby held her hands in front of her body. “Hear me out.”
“You and Sarah robbed more than one bank, didn’t you?”
“We robbed three banks.”
“Three fucking banks?” I shouted.
“No one is going to suspect two white lovely Christian women of robbing banks. White privilege defined.”
I looked at my dark hand and laughed. “White girls. I swear — you get away with everything.”

“Betcha I could get away with murder,” Gabby said.
“Murdering who?” I said.
